HOTREC position paper on EU-wide regulation of Short-Term Rentals

Over the past decade, Short-Term Rentals (STRs) services in Europe have been growing exponentially, thus exposing tourism and hospitality businesses and local communities to several risks: unfair competition, consumer exposure to safety hazards, unreported tax income, and, above all, the increasing pressure on local residents’ access to affordable housing.

Our sector is now looking forward to further regulating this phenomenon and establishing a level playing field across tourism accommodation services.

Today, the European Commission is working on the introduction of a new Regulation on STR services which will focus on establishing mandatory registration for STR hosts and data-sharing requirements for platforms.

Ahead of the European Commission’s proposal, expected to be presented later this fall, we are delighted to present our Position paper on EU-wide regulation of Short-Term Rentals.

The position paper is also available here in a shorter version.
